Acoustic guitar? Repetetive drum beat? Generic, android-like vocalist? This must be alternative music!

What rock bands call themselves because they think it sounds more original then rock and they think it makes them different when really they are one of the millions off other "alternative" bands

Some guy from generic rock band- lets say we aren’t rock but play alternative music because then people will think we are really original and not rock

A less intense version of rock and a more intense version of pop. Typically strays from the generic lyrics of pop. Lots of sub-categories, but the main two are alternative rock and alternative pop. Pretty much anything that doesn't fall into the distinct categories like rock, pop, jazz, classical, etc.

It also includes a lot of musical techniques found in other genres. Not very limited creatively.

Alternative music is amazing. Some bands are The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, New Politics, Weezer, The Kooks, Cage the Elephant, The Moth and The Flame, alt-J, Modest Mouse, Paramore, Two Door Cinema Club, The Wombats, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Cold War Kids, Phoenix, Muse, Bastille, and Keane. Just to name a few.

A vast music genre that can be similar to pop music, or completely different. Unlike pop music, the artists and bands have real talent. Some alternative bands are Every Avenue, MGMT, and The Naked And Famous. They may not be played on the radio but that doesn't mean they are not great.

Alternative music is a music genre for those who have no music genre.
