A type of American scent hound that was bred to hunt racoons (or "coons"), opossums, and
bobcats that try to escape up into the trees.
Foxhounds, on the other hand, chase foxes, who try to escape into their dens in the ground. There are many different breeds of coon
hounds, and their appearance can vary greatly. Many "fox hunters" in the US South actually hunt with coon hounds.
My aunt in Georgia does a lot of
fox hunting with her horse and her
coon hounds.
