Define Gender Identity Meaning

Gender Identity
The individual identification of a person's gender, as defined by that person. Usually used in reference to transgender, genderqueer, or transsexual people -- people whose gender identities differ from their physical sex.

Jay has been really confused about her gender identity lately; she thinks maybe she's an androgyne, but she's not certain.

Jane is a transsexual woman, so her gender identity is pretty solidly feminine.

Gender Identity
One’s internal sense of being male, female, neither of these, both, or other gender(s). This is separate from the sex one was assigned at birth, and can be different from one’s gender expression.

Person 1: “There are only 2 genders - penis & vagina!”
Person 2: “Actually, there are a lot more than two, and gender identity isn’t determined by physical attributes like genitals. *Tries to explain how they’re incorrect*”

Usually this will match a persons sex but in some cases when the brain doesn't get enough hormones at birth the brain can develop to be opposite to a person's sex or be genderless and the person will be born transgender.

Gender Identity Disorder
Gender identity disorder is defined as a disorder in which an individual believes they are a gender not assigned to them at birth based on their genitalia. Believing something to be true that is proven not to be is considered a delusion. Individuals with gender identity disorder should receive therapy and care to treat their disorder as one would treat any other disorder: with compassion, patience, and respect. Not surgery.
