An area of forest that exists mainly in the Southern half of New Jersey and eastern Long Island. The forest consists mostly of Pitch Pine and
swamps of Atlantic White
Cedar (NJ). Relatively flat and sandy. Nicknamed the Pine Barrens by early
settlers because of the difficulty of growing crops in the sandy, acidic soil.
