In sociolinguistics, a social
dialect associated with a certain
socioeconomic class, ethnic or
age group. It is a combination of the terms "social" or "socioeconomic" with "dialect."
Valspeak is a sociolect that originated in California's San Fernando Valley in the 1970s with the language of
the Valley Girl. Examples are "
fer shur" and "totally" usually made with high variation in pitch. Popularized in music and film in the 1980s.
