A place in which people have no (or no access to) social institutions of a genuine, historically developed culture, and are thus
reduced to considering the
mundane or
vulgar as culturally significant.
That town is a
cultural wasteland; people only congregate at places like McDonald's and Walmart and consider trashy car mods and
bootleg drugs to be part of their collective identity.
Man, I wish there was something to do this weekend that isn't just meaningless
consumerism. What a depressing cultural wasteland.
