a schooly is someone that stays on at school in the sixth form, as they are choosing to stay at their school, because it is no longer compulsory for them to be there.

Schoolies as a term was first used in 1974.
Until then it had been a loose gathering of Private School graduates.
In 1974, on Hedges Avenue a meeting of Secondary School graduates convened to organise a schedule of events for the week.
