Surreal
Popular usage has transformed the word "surreal" into litle more than a synonym for "weird", and so rendered it useless. I'll use "surrealistic" if a film (or any work of art) exhibits mannered mimicking of superficial aspects of the visual style of the original Surrealists between the wars (commonly, cribs from Dali, Magritte, Chirico, Bunuel or Cocteau). In all other cases I prefer more specific terms, like "dreamlike", "Nightmarish" or "Bunuelesque". I'd reserve "surrealist" for the output of members of recognized Surrealist groups.

Everything is so surreal.

Surreal
By definition, a synonym for weird. Often used by critics to describe situations in comedy in which the character does something out of the ordinary or unexpected. This form of comedy is intended to catch you off guard, and is usually used sparingly to increase it's impact. Few comedy shows or movies revolve around utterly surreal comedy to the point where a serious or dramatic moment is, in turn, surreal, in the show, or reverse surreal. Shows such as Spongebob Squarepants, Bobobo-bo-bo-bobo, Space Ghost, and Xavier Renegade Angel are examples of shows that often use Surreal comedy.

In short, the word Surreal is mainly used to describe a bizarre situation, event, or action in comedy or real life intended to throw the audience off guard, rarely having a punchline, other than the fact that it so bizarrely happens.

I just watched a cartoon where a dog just randomly talked in a low voice. It was so random, I had to call it Surreal.
