1. The act of crafting a sympathetic,
morally gray fictional character, especially one with a tragic or abusive back story, and leading the audience to believe the character will
atone and rise above their circumstances, then "
subverting expectations" by driving the character to the madness they tried to avoid, resulting in the character meeting a gruesome end. Bonus points if the character in question dies by the hand of a lover and/or has a sick ride that rains hellfire.
