oxide of nitrogen capable of deadening perception of pain and finally producing unconsciousness: Used as inhalation
anesthetic during dental and other procedures, as a
propellant in whipped-cream dispensers and often abused as a recreational drug (laughing gas).
Nitrous Oxide was discovered in 1800 by chemist
Humphrey Davy, who first suggested its use as an
anesthetic.
