African American Vernacular English (AAVE), also called African American English, Black English, Black Vernacular, or Black English Vernacular (BEV), is a type variety (dialect, ethnolect and sociolect) of the American English language. It is known colloquially as Ebonics (a portmanteau of "ebony" and "phonics"). With pronunciation that in some respects is common to Southern American English, the variety is spoken by many blacks in the United States. AAVE shares many characteristics with various Creole English dialects spoken by blacks in much of the world. AAVE also has pronunciation, grammatical structures, and vocabulary in common with various West African languages. Ebonics is not merely just the use of urban or "slang" words, but rather it is the manipulation and transformation of the English language (ie, In the sentence "I want to have sex with a chickenhead", a slang word is used, but the speaker is not using ebonics.)

"He workin'."- He is working (right now).

"He been hit dat from last week."- He has already had sex with that(her), since last week.

"I'm finna go get some chicken." I am (or possibly I am considering) going to get chicken.

"I aint doin' nuthin' fo'dat ho."- I am not going to do anything for that whorish woman.

"Don't be tellin' me dat I can't talk good cuz I speak ebonics."- Do not tell me that I am unable to speak well just because I speak ebonics.

Ebonics
(n.) derivative word form resulting from the combination of "ebony" (referring to pigmentation) and "phonics". An evolving form of American English popularized in multimedia. Once only heard/spoken primarily in impoverished urban neighborhoods, it has infiltrated American culture to the point where some of the nation's largest public school districts even considered teaching it as part of the general curriculum.

The "For Dummies" publishing company would make a mint if they printed an "Ebonics For Dummies" title.

Ebonics
The heart of AAVE, the part that is shared across most age groups (although they tend to be used most frequently by teenagers) and that link it most strongly to the language's origins in the creole speech of slavery (compare parallels with creole dialects in the Caribbean today or in Hawaii), is its phonology and grammar. These are the parts that tend to be less often diffused to other groups, and that are the most lasting and the most regular. The single biggest mistake people make about AAVE is dismissing it as careless, or lazy speech, where anything goes. As with all spoken languages, AAVE is extremely regular, rule-governed, and systematic.

-John R. Rickford, Stanford University

AAVE/ebonics: "She BIN had dat han'-made dress" (SE: She's had that hand-made dress for a long time, and still does.)

AAVE: "Befo' you know it, he be done aced de tesses." (SE Before you know it, he will have already aced the tests.)

AAVE: "Ah 'on know what homey be doin." (SE: I don't know what my friend is usually doing.)

AAVE: "Can't nobody tink de way he do." (SE: Nobody can think the way he does.)

AAVE: "I ast Ruf could she bring it ovah to Tom crib." (SE: I asked Ruth if/whether she could bring it over to Tom's place.)
