Homophobic
In modern times this is probably the most misused word. The first part of the word, homo comes from the masculine Latin noun homo hominis (a third declension noun for any latin scholars) and it translates as man or human being. Phobia comes from the Greek word phobós which translates as fear or morbid fear. So when combined they form the word homophobic which is and adjective for one who is afraid of man and a non homophobe, one who fears man, or homophobia, the fear of man. There is nothing about homosexuality in homophobia. A better word may be homosexaphobic.

Homophobic is used wrong because very few humans are afraid of human beings. Homophobia is most prevalent in all other species who have become afraid of humans because of our harmful actuons which result in their habitat loss and eventual death.

Homophobic
The absolute dumbest term one can use to describe someone with no tolerance for homosexual behavior. Assumes that one must have a deep-seated fear of gays in order to feel contempt for them or insult them, as opposed to just being ignorant, hateful or brusque.

Are people who hate gays bigotted and hick-like? Yes. Afraid of them? Nobody says "Jewphobia", they say antisemitism, and a Klansman is not a "blackophobe". Try watching Will and Grace and then tell me that a gay man is something to be feared.

Example of the term "homophobic" being properly used:

Cletus: Fags're threatinin' mah way of life! Gawd's fixin' teh punish Amer'cans!

Person with Brain: Wow, homophobic much?

---------------------

Example of using the term like a fucking idiot:

Emilio: You listen to Coldplay? Ha! Faggot!

Robyn: OH MY GOD you said "faggot"! That's so ignorant and homophobic!

Emilio: You're embarassingly PC. Ever hear of colloquial use, retard?

Homophobic
Replaces gay (def 4: "The ultimate insult in any middle school argument.") once one has grown tired of using gay to describe everything.

Dude, your car is homophobic.

I can't believe you missed that shot, homophobe.

Homophobic
what nerds and hippies people call you when you use the word gay as an insult. Bad word for what people use it for as most 'homophobes' aren't actually afraid of gay people.

guy: that is so gay!
dork: don't be homophobic! that is insulting!
guy: why, are you gay?

Homophobe
Someone who repeatedly whines that homosexuals endanger family values and the sanctity of marriage, until outed as a closet case, desperately afraid of the gay person looking back in the mirror.

Someone who calls homosexuality a "lifestyle choice" but their own biology disagrees. Think about it: did you CHOOSE to be straight? As a teenager did you sit down one day and decide whether to be attracted to boys or girls?

It isn't surprising that stories about homophobes (like Bob Allen, Roy Ashburn, Bruce Barclay, Larry Craig, John Curtin, Mark Foley, Matthew Glavin, Ted Haggard, Phillip Hinkle, Glenn Murphy, Brent Parker, George Rekers, Ed Schrock, etc) often end with "was caught behind the restroom with a cock in his mouth".

Homophobe
This should mean someone who's afraid of sameness, or afraid of humans. Instead, it means someone who hates homosexuals (but may or may not actually be afraid of them).

"Why were they gay-bashing?"
"Because they're homophobes."
"But if they're scared of gays, why didn't they run screaming at the sight of them?"
"I didn't come up with the term!"
